This was my second attempt in thirty years to read this cerebral masterpiece. It could have been condensed down into about five pages, and made essentially the same impact. The fragment breaks off as the young contemporary of Bach happens upon an organ recital in Stuttgart. I’m not sure why: Gave hetmann halfway through. Many characters in the novel have names that are allusive word games.
The central character is, abalorio we are repeatedly told, this overwhelmingly charismatic leader, but we’re only told this, it never comes out in Hesse’s portrait of him. Like some of Ayn Rand’s novels, t If there’s one thing about fiction I dislike it is not “getting” the point.
