Because of the absence of improvement, a CT-scan was performed and an abscess localized at the base of the condyle, surrounding the posterior margin of the mandible, very high above the lingula. Outcome was favourable after a second surgery. Formation of an abscess very high above the lingula, around the condylar neck is rarely reported in the literature. In this patient it was certainly a complication resulting from the injection of local anesthesic with a vasoconstrictor.

Vicent, a regular contributor to the Spanish newspaper El Pais and winner of the Premio Nadal, the Premio Gonz lez Ruano, and the Premio Alfaguara for previous works, demonstrates his intimate knowledge of the Spanish art world in this vocent novel.

He weaves an intriguing tale of collectors, dealers, forgers, and thieves that will grip readers until the surprising finale. When Luis Bastos asks the international art dealer Michel Vedrano to sleep with Julia, his wife, who has only three months to live, he sets off a series manurl events in which the three central characters come to discover their bizarre and symbiotic relationship.

Vicent’s novel is passionate, colorful, at times crude, and wickedly comical, with an edginess that befits the art world. And although it depicts the passionate and sometimes cruel realms of art and beauty, at the center of the novel is the remarkable metamorphosis of a woman.

Guided by Laa, Julia experiences the sensuous side of art and is transformed from a trophy wife into an art connoisseur. Vicent writes dee an accessible style, so that native and non-native speakers alike will find this book engaging. La Novia de Matisse

In the world of paintings, art dealers, collectors, and museum thieves, is a fascinating maunel ruled by power of beauty, which can save or destroy any lover. The energy of a work of art never disappears, but can be transformed, venerated, admired. Yet beauty can also cast a curse, especially when it forces you to live on the other side of seduction.

Woven around a nude woman in one of the Matisse’s paintings, this is the story of a woman who is destined to unite beauty, pleasure and immortality in one happy moment that is also within the reach of any reader.

In it he identifies three main types of Atonement Theory: The earliest was what he called the “classic” view of the Atonement, more commonly known as Ransom Theory or since ’31 known sometimes as the “Christus Victor” theory. Some have argued that the penal substitution theory of the atonement was expressed by early church fathers, such as Justin Martyr c.

A 3rd is the “subjective” theory, commonly known as the Moral Influence view, that Christ’s passion was an act of exemplary obedience which affects the intentions of those who come to know about it.

This book is not yet featured on Listopia. Jan 20, Joel Wentz rated it it was amazing. This classic work of theology is indispensable reading for anyone who grew up in the Western church tradition. Aulen was a prominent theologian in the early s, and this short book is one of his most well-known works, and for good reason!

Growing up in the evangelical church, I had always assumed that “penal substitution” was simply the only way of understanding Christ’s atoning work. As an historical overview, Christus Victor clearly shows that this tradition emerged from what Aulen calls th This classic work of theology is indispensable reading for anyone who grew up in the Western church tradition. As an historical overview, Christus Victor clearly shows that this tradition emerged from what Aulen calls the “Latin” understanding of atonement, which wasn’t clearly articulated until around years into the church’s existence!

Rather, Aulen argues that the “classic” understanding of atonement Christ’s victory over sin and death has the strongest historical precedent.

Gustaf Aulén – Wikipedia

While Christus Victor isn’t an apologetic for any one atonement tradition though it’s clear that Aulen is convinced the “classic” understanding is the victofit is a supremely helpful survey of how different strands of atonement doctrine have emerged through our history. For me, it helped me understand some of my own discomfort with “penal subsitution”, as well as the scope of how the body of Christ have wrestled with this doctrine through the ages.

Jul 05, Judah Ivy rated it really liked it Shelves: Aulen’s book was a much-needed elucidation for me. Before reading it I’d only heard references and short descriptions victof the “Christus Victor” view of Christs’ work of atonement. It’s a very informative work. He details the origin and development of the three main types of atonement theology: The Classic view, which he puts forward as the authentic type, and shows to have been chritus main idea of the atonement held by the early church fathers.

He states multiple times in the book that he’s not writing an apologetic work in favor of the “classic” Christus Victor view of the atonement, but it’s obvious to see where his sympathies lie. Once you get the hang of it it all makes sense. He keeps on saying that the “Classic” type over against the “Latin” type emphasizes the importance of the Incarnation, but I don’t see how. To quote from the section “An Analysis of the Three Types”: His true manhood receives full emphasis. But yet again, this does not mean that the redemptive work of Christ is regarded as performed by him purely as man, or that it gains increased value through the association of the Deity with the Humanity.

Why not just defeat the “enemies” in His unveiled Godhood? At the end of the book he points out that the “Classic” Christus Victor view has never been and will never be a “rational” theory or doctrine, but rather a motif, a theme, an Idea.

Not because it is indefinite, but rather because of the pairs of apparent contradictions it involves e.

He ends with saying that “The images are but popular helps for the understanding of the idea, It is the Idea itself which is primary”, which almost convinces me that C. Lewis read this book as well, considering this quote from Mere Christianity: That is the formula. That is what has to be believed.

Any aulne we build up as to how Christ’s death did all this are, in my view, quite secondary: View all 3 comments. Aug 04, Jacob Aitken added it. Triumphing over the powers, July 15, This book provides an historically-faithful alternative to the substitutionary and exemplary models of the atonement.

Its strength lies in its presentation of a vivid and robust picture of the work of Christ. Its the book, not the model weakness is its simplistic reductions of other theologians’ thoughts. The Christus Victor model presents the work of Christ as a triumph over the devil, powers demonsbondage of sin, and the “law. Christ united humanity to his nature to redeem it.

He redeemed it still united to his nature on the cross. This is to be contrasted with the Latin views of the atonement, which are narrowly penal. The Latin views incorporate merit and penance in the atonment model. For Aulen, this move removes the work of God from the work of Christ in redemption. Criticisms of the work: This is why I give it 4 stars. I do not think he dealt as fairly with St Anselm as he could have.

Aulen also used gustqf that begged the question in favor of his position. Aside from the above criticisms, this is a paradigm-shifting book. Important for its day, this book is now largely discredited. Bad history and weak systematic imagination. If it merely gets the CV theory out it chritsus a total flop, but it still requires much qualification and vicctor. Apr 25, Chungsoo J. Lee rated it it was amazing Shelves: But after all these years, do we really understand the meaning of the Cross or have we exhausted all of its meaning?

He is able to see through the complex, symbolic, and loose language of theologians both ancient and modern and categorize and trace the theme of atonement into three groups: Another exception to this linear progression is Tertullian, who along with Gregory the Great, started the motif of the judicial guataf legalistic view of atonement, which was later picked up and fully developed by Anselm of Canterbury, thus chrisgus the view for the whole medieval period.

The judicial view is later further rationalized by aylen Protestant Orthodox, including Calvin despite their protest against the medieval Catholicism. The subjective view of atonement is championed by Schleiermacher in the 19th century and, wittingly or not, still dominates to the present day, including the American Evangelicals such as Billy Graham.

The book is subtitled: His contemporary Karl Barth is briefly mentioned at the wulen as a dialectical theologian but is not categorized in any of the three groups. After all, Barth had completely revised his commentary on the Epistle to the Romanswhich was published in the second edition ; and his work on the Church Dogmatics only began sometime between at Bonn where he held a short tenure as Professor of Systematic Theology before taking a post in Basel, Switzerland.

The idea is that Christ, the second Adam, defeated the power of sin and death that subjugated humanity ever since the first Adam. Adam fell at the forbidden tree; and creation was lost as result.

But Christ conquered death on the cross, rescuing humanity from the bondage of evil and thus vkctor creation back to life and reconciling humanity to God. Atonement is an act of Christks offered to human, not human offering it to God, through which God reconciles the world to Himself.

Just like Abraham sacrificing his own son, Isaac, God himself sacrifices Himself in his Son, to reconcile Himself with humanity: This idea is traced back to Irenaeus, who wrote: Man had been created by God that he might have life. If now, having lost life, and having been harmed by the serpent, he were not to return to life, but were to be wholly auulen to death, then God would have been defeated, ad the malice of the serpent would have overcome God’s will.

But since God is both invincible and magnanimous, He showed His magnanimity in correcting man, and in proving all men, as we have said; but through the Second Man He bound the strong one, and spoiled his goods, and annihilated death, bringing life to man who had become subject to death. For Adam had become the devil’s possession, and the devil held him under his vitor, by having wrongfully practised deceit upon him, and by the offer of immortality made him subject to death.

For by promising that they should be as gods, which did not lie in his power, he worked death in them. Wherefore he who had taken man captive was himself taken captive by God, and man who had been taken captive was set from the bondage of condemnation” as quoted on For Irenaeus the Incarnation is part of God’s atoning aule. He must become man to rescue man from the bondage of the evil. By death death is conquered. By the Second Adam’s obedience the first Adam’s fall is corrected. Salvation is “recapitulation,” where the fallen or lost creation to the devil christua restored and perfected.

The Hebrew word ” tikkun olam ,” repairing the world, has the same idea. If Christ’s death on the cross defeats the power of death, His resurrection perfects the creation through the work of the Holy Spirit.

Thus, the entire life of Christ–from his birth to death and through resurrection and ascension–is the work of atonement cbristus which God reconciles himself with the world. The classical view of atonement is sometimes referred to as the “ransom” theory, because Christ’s life is offered as “a ransom for many,” as Mark Then, the absurd question arises: Such a question distorts the classical view. The idea of purchase at a price is foreign fustaf the classical view hcristus by the Greek Fathers.

Christ is not paying the devil; rather, He is claiming back the world away from the bondage of sin and death.

One of the decisive developments in the western philosophical tradition was the eventually widespread merging of the Greek philosophical tradition and the Triitate religious and scriptural traditions.

Augustine is one of the main figures through and by whom this merging was accomplished. He is, as well, one of the towering figures of medieval philosophy whose authority and thought came to dee a pervasive and enduring influence well into the modern period e. Descartes and especially Malebrancheand even up to the present day, especially among those sympathetic to the religious tradition which he helped to shape e.

Plantinga ; Adams Augustine is not only one of the major sources whereby classical philosophy in general and Neoplatonism in particular enter into the mainstream of early and subsequent medieval philosophy, but there are significant contributions of his own triitate emerge from his modification of that Greco-Roman inheritance, e.

Only four of his seventy-five years were spent outside Northern Africa, and fifty-seven of the remaining seventy-one were in teinitate relatively out of the way places as Thagaste and Hippo Regius, both belonging to Roman provinces, neither notable for either cultural or commercial prominence.

However, the few years Augustine spent away from Northern Africa exerted an incalculable influence upon his thought, and his geographical distance from the major intellectual and political capitals of the Later Roman Empire should not obscure the tremendous influence he came to exert even in his own lifetime.

Here, agustni elsewhere, one is confronted by a figure both strikingly liminal and, at times, intriguingly ambivalent.

He was, as already noted, a long time resident and, eventually, Bishop in Northern Africa whose thought was transformed and redirected during the four brief years he spent in Rome and Milan, far away from the provincial context where he was born and died and spent almost all of the years in between; he was a man who tells us that he never thought of himself as not being in some sense a Christian [ Confessions III.

Perhaps most striking of all, Augustine bequeathed to the Latin West a voluminous body of work that contains at its chronological extremes two quite dissimilar portraits of the human condition. In the beginning, there is a largely Hellenistic portrait, one that is notable for the optimism that a sufficiently rational and disciplined life can safely escape the ever-threatening circumstantial adversity that seems to surround xan.

Nearer the end, however, there emerges a considerably grimmer portrait, one that emphasizes the impotence of the unaided human will, and the later Augustine presents a moral landscape populated largely by the massa damnata [ De Civitate Dei XXI.

The sheer quantity of the writing that unites these two extremes, much of which survives, is truly staggering. There are well over titles [listed at Fitzgeraldpp. It is arguably impossible to construct any moderate sized and manageable list of his major philosophical works that would not occasion some controversy in terms of what is omitted, but surely any list would have to include Contra Academicos [ Against trintiate Academicians— C.

Born in C. He subsequently taught rhetoric in Thagaste and Carthage, and in he made the risk-laden journey from Northern Africa to Rome, seeking the ttinitate sort of students that was rumored to be there. Disappointed by the moral quality of those students academically superior to his previous students, they nonetheless had an annoying tendency to disappear without paying their feeshe successfully applied for a professorship of rhetoric in Milan. After this separation, however, Augustine abruptly resigned his professorship in claiming dee health, renounced his professional ambitions, and was baptized by Bishop Ambrose of Milan on Easter Sunday, after spending four months at Cassiciacum where he composed his earliest extant works.

Shortly thereafter, Trinitatr began his return to Northern Africa, but not before his mother died at Ostia, a seaport outside Rome, tirnitate awaiting the voyage across trunitate Mediterranean. Not too long after this, Augustine, now back in Thagaste, also lost his sam The agustib of his years would be spent immersed in the affairs and agystin of the Church into which he had been recently baptized, a Church that henceforth provided for Augustine the crucial nexus of relations that his family and friends had once been.

InAugustine was reluctantly ordained as a priest by the congregation of Hippo Regius a not uncommon practice in Northern Agudtinin he was made Bishop, and he died August in Hippo, thirty-five years later, as the Vandals were besieging the gates of the city. However, when Augustine himself recounts his first thirty-two years in his Confessionshe makes clear that many of the decisive events of his early life were, to use his own imagery, of a considerably more internal nature than the relatively external facts cited above.

From his own account, he was a precocious and able student, much enamored of the Latin classics, Virgil in particular [ Confessions I. For Augustine, the problem was of a more general and visceral sort: In this aan, the wisdom that Augustine sought was a common denominator uniting the conflicting views of such Hellenistic philosophical sects as the Epicureans, Stoics, Skeptics, and Neoplatonists though this is a later title such as Plotinus and Porphyry, as well as many Christians of varying degrees of agusfin, including dee unorthodox gnostic sects such as the Manicheans.

Augustine himself comes to spend nine years as a hearer among the Manicheans [see Brownpp. The Manicheans proposed a powerful, if somewhat mythical and philosophically awkward explanation of the problem of evil: By means of sufficient insight and a sufficiently ascetic life, however, one could eventually, over the course of several lives, come to liberate the Light within from the surrounding Darkness, thus rejoining the larger Light of which the soul is but a fragmented and isolated part.

As Augustine recounts it trinitafe the Confessions [see Confessions V. Sxn Moribus Ecclesiae Catholicae 1], he became disenchanted with the inability of the Manichean elect to provide sufficiently detailed and rigorous explanations of their cosmology. As a result, he began to drift away from the sect during his sojourn in Rome, flirting for awhile with academic skepticism [ Confessions V. When Augustine eventually comes to write about the Manicheans, there are three features upon which he will focus: According to Augustine, this latter identification not only se to render the human soul divine, thereby obliterating the crucial distinction between creator and creature, but it also raises doubts about the extent to which the individual human soul can be held responsible for morally bad actions, responsibility instead being attributed to the body in which the soul itself quasi material is trapped.

These uncertainties notwithstanding, Augustine himself makes it clear that it was his encounter with the books of the Platonists that made it possible for him to view both agusrin Church and its scriptural tradition as having an intellectually satisfying and, indeed, resourceful content.

Right and Just — christianitas-blog: De Trinitate. San Agustín.

In his earliest writings [e. Contra AcademicosC. But by the time he composes the Confessions —C. Part of this gradual change of attitude is attributable to his detailed study of scriptural texts especially the Pauline lettersas well as his immersion in both the daily affairs of his monastic community and the rather focused sorts of controversies that confronted the Church in the fourth and fifth centuries.

Beyond his already noted, protracted battle with Manicheanism, there is also his involvement in the North African Donatist controversy [see Brownpp. In this latter case, serious issues arose regarding the sah of grace and the efficacy of the unaided gaustin will, issues that, as we will see, played an important role in shaping his views on human freedom and predestination.

These important qualifications notwithstanding, the fact dw that this Platonism also provided Augustine with a xan framework far more pliable and enduring than he himself is willing to admit in his later works. Moreover, this framework itself forms an important part of the philosophical legacy that Augustine bequeathed to both the medieval and modern trnitate. Sometimes this feature is easy to overlook, but its significance is obvious enough: Aghstin this, the work would be rather like a map that is as large as of that of which it is intended to be a map, thus making it not a map at all.

In order to bring some coherence to the material at hand, there must be some effort to provide an interpretive framework for the material, focusing on relevant and important highlights while omitting others that would obscure those highlights. The second reason is more specific to Augustine: Presented as an extended prayer to God, Augustine szn not merely telling the tale of his own life, but also using sxn life as a concrete example of how an isolated individual soul can extricate itself dr this state and Neoplatonically ascend to a unity that overcomes this isolation and attains to rest in God.

Also important are the means by which he seeks to accomplish this task: With respect to his relations with others, he begins with his ruminations upon infancy and the isolation of the infant, which initially seems to be overcome by the acquisition of language. But as he tells the story in Confessions I, language is itself a double-edged sword: Although Augustine is aware by the time he writes the Confessions that there are differences between Christianity and Neoplatonism, he nonetheless makes its clear that the latter makes it possible for him to regard the former as intellectually credible.

The overarching Neoplatonic strategy of the first nine Books goes a long way toward explaining what might otherwise be a strange shift in the remaining four books, in which the autobiography recedes into the background.

This strategy, combined with the related themes of the role of language and texts in his spiritual progress, also explains the fact that Books XII and XIII are devoted to exegesis of the first chapters of Genesis.

Saint Augustine

Agustinn noted above, Augustine at first disdained biblical texts owing to their rhetorical inelegance. Now, however, having a framework that enables him to discern their actual inner depth, these texts acquire a prominence and indicate the culmination of that long journey which began with his immersion into the double-edged domain of human speech and written word.

Moreover, these final Books, along with the Neoplatonic framework he discovers in Book VII though, as we have seen, it also governs the structure of ttinitate Confessions as a wholeenable him to further probe the puzzles that he raised in the first five chapters of Book I. In short, what once struck Augustine as the texts least worthy of attention have now become the texts of all texts, because they contain sqn answers to the questions and problems that have propelled him from the very beginning of the Confessions.

Scientia y sapientia en De Trinitate XII: San Agustín y las formas de la racionalidad

For many readers, one of the most troubling passages of the Confessions occurs at VI. As Augustine recounts it Confessions VI. It is also quite possible that it would serve him in the pursuit of a more worldly career. But it could serve as an impediment to social advancement unless it was replaced by the more formal arrangement of matrimonium. Hence, the obvious questions: Why the abruptness of the dismissal?

Why not enter with his companion of thirteen years into the more respectable relation of matrimonium? Why anonymity for someone with whom he had spent thirteen years in a monogamous relationship? Why the headlong rush into another, temporary relationship, whereas his companion returned to Northern Africa vowing never to enter into another relationship?

Was their devotion to one another as asymmetrical as Augustine seems to suggest? Was ttinitate as callous and as indifferent as the text seems to present him? If one examines the text tinitate enough, there do seem to be answers to these questions: Also, what was the social class of his companion?

Differences in social class could often prevent the transition from a relation of concubinatus to one matrimonium. On a more tdinitate level, it is obvious that Monica played a significant role in the arrangement of the more respectable marriage szn which Augustine was obliged to wait. More importantly, Augustine makes it clear at VI. As for the anonymity of his companion, this is not unusual in the Confessions as a whole.

When he does mentions names e. Alypius, Nebridius, Faustus, Ambrose, Monicathey are names that would have been known to contemporary readers of the text. But they also serve as character types: A prime example is his protracted discussion of an anonymous friend in Book IV, a pathos-ridden account that leaves no doubt about the importance of the relationship to Augustine. But perhaps of most importance are two textual points which indicate the significance of this relationship to Augustine.

The first is that the episode he recounts xe of an intensely personal nature, not necessary to the rhetorical strategy of the Confessions as a whole.

But even more important is the imagery employed in his account of the separation. There are only two passages in the entire Confessions which employ similar imagery: Given the imagery employed here, there does look to be sa philosophical import in this otherwise intensely personal passage: Needless to say, this does not completely exonerate Augustine. And if the choice was his own, then he appears even more culpable. In the Confessionswhere Augustine gives his most extensive discussion of the books of the Platonists, he makes clear that his previous thinking was dominated by a common-sense materialism [ Confessions IV.

It was the books of the Agusin that first made it possible for him to conceive the possibility of a non-physical substance [ Confessions VII. In addition, the books of the Platonists provided him with a metaphysical framework of extraordinary dee and subtlety, dee richly-textured tableau upon which the human condition could be plotted.

It can both account for the obvious difficulties with which life confronts us, while also offering grounds for a eudaimonism notable for the depth of its moral optimism. In this respect, the ontology that Augustine acquired from the books of the Platonists is, in terms of its intent, not all that different from the materialism of the Epicureans, Stoics, and even the Manicheans.

Augustine of Hippo

What sets the Neoplatonic ontology apart, however, is both the resoluteness of its promise agusyin the architectonic grandeur with which it complements the world of visible appearances. In spite of the dualistic implications, this is clearly not intended to be a dualistic alternative to the moral dualism of the Manicheans and other gnostics [see, e. Instead, the divide is situated within what is supposed to be a larger, unified hierarchy that begins with absolute unity and progressively unfolds through various stages of increasing plurality and multiplicity, culminating in the lowest realm of isolated and fragmented material objects observed with the agutsin [see Bussanichpp.

Thus, for Augustine, God is regarded as the ultimate source and point of origin for all that comes below. Augustine, especially in his earlier works, focuses upon the contrast between the intelligible and the sensible, enjoining his reader to realize that the former alone holds out what we seek in the latter: Indeed, in the vision at Ostia agustih Confessions IX.
