Listen here! Duane Silverstein is the Executive Director of Seacology, a Berkeley, California based non-profit, dedicated to saving coral reefs and mangroves around the world. Seacology has adopted an unusual but effective approach to motivating small villages on island nations to join in this effort - the barter system. In exchange for a Kindergarten, a resource center, or even a paved road, local governments must agree to create no-fishing zones or plant mangrove seedlings, and to educate their citizens about why this is ecologically sounder - and more in their own best interest - than succumbing to the pressures of the shrimp farming industry.
