Checking in with Duane Silverstein

Duane SilversteinListen here! Duane Silverstein is the Executive Director of Seacology, a Berkeley, California based non-profit, dedicated to saving coral reefs and mangroves around the world. Seacology has adopted an unusual but effective approach to motivating small villages on island nations to join in this effort - the barter system. In exchange for a Kindergarten, a resource center, or even a paved road, local governments must agree to create no-fishing zones or plant mangrove seedlings, and to educate their citizens about why this is ecologically sounder - and more in their own best interest - than succumbing to the pressures of the shrimp farming industry.

I caught up with Duane at his office last week and asked him about his interest in the ocean, what inspires him to take action, and to explain how Seacology is saving coral reefs. Listen in

Donovan Watts is Producer, Director, reporter and more for Coral Reef Report.
